Levelland is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Hockley County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located on U.S. Highway 385 and Highway 140 in northwestern Texas, in the southwestern part of the Texas Panhandle, about 63 miles from New Mexico to the west away and has a total area of 25.7 km ² without significant water surface.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 12,866 people in 4,574 households and 3,361 families. The population density was 500.8 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 70.34 % White, 5.36 % African American, 0.95 % Native American, 0.18 % Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander residents from the and 20.92 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.21% were of mixed descent, and 39.21 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 4,574 households, 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.9 % were married couples living together. 13.2% were single mothers and 26.5 % were non-families. 23.2 % of all households were single-person households, and 11.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size amounted to 3.17.

27.6% of the population were under 18 years old, 14.0 % from 18 to 24, 24.6% 25-44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.9 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 93.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 88.0 males.

The median income for a household was $ 28,820, and the median income for a family $ 32,408. Males have a median income of $ 29,800 versus $ 20,042 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,296. 20.2 % of the population and 15.7 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 25.8 % have children under the age of 18 and 13.2 % of those 65 or older.
