Graham is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Young County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located at the junction of U.S. Highway 380 to Highway 16 and 67 in the southeast of the county in north-central Texas. The distance to Oklahoma is 114 km. Graham has a total area of 14.2 km ² without significant water surface.

History

The first settlement was in 1871 by Gustavus A. and Edwin S. Graham from Kentucky, after which the town was named.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 8,716 people in 3,391 households and 2,366 families. The population density was 611.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 88.39 % White, 1.24 % African American, 0.55 % Native American, 0.30 % Asian, 0.08 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 7.78 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.66% were of mixed descent, and 13.41% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 3,391 households, 32.6 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.9 % were married couples living together. 10.3% were single mothers and 30.2% were non-families. 27.3 % of all households were single-person households, and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size amounted to 3.01.

26.0% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.6 % from 18 to 24, 25.2% 25-44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.8 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 39 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 83.3 males.

The median income for a household was $ 31,081, and the median income for a family $ 38,118. Males have a median income of $ 30,221 versus $ 19,574 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,587. 17.4 % of the population and 13.0 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 23.0 % have children under the age of 18 and 13.5 % of those 65 or older.
