Rockwall is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Rockwall County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located on Lake Ray Hubbard about 15 kilometers east of Dallas and has a total area of 58.7 km ², of which 1.0 km ² water surface.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 17,976 people in 6,605 households and 5,158 families. The population density was 311.5 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 91.35 % White, 3.00 % African American, 0.38 % Native American, 1.39 % Asian, 0.03 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 2.57 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.28% were of mixed descent, and 6.44 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 6,605 households, 39.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 66.8 % were married couples living together. 8.7% were single mothers and 21.9 % were non-families. 18.6 % of all households were single-person households and 5.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size amounted to 3.06.

27.5 % of the population were under 18 years old, 6.9 % from 18 to 24, 30.9% 25-44, 25.1% from 45 to 64, and 9.7 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 37 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 92.1 males.

The median income for a household was $ 65,411, and the median income for a family $ 75,121. Males had a median income of $ 55,370 versus $ 35,139 for females. The per capita income was $ 29,843. 3.9 % of the population and 3.2% of families are below the poverty line. Of which 4.6 % have children under the age of 18 and 3.0 % of those 65 or older.
