Del Rio is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Val Verde County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in the southeastern corner of the county in southeast Texas along the Rio Grande on the border with Mexico, opposite the Mexican city of Ciudad Acuña and has a total area of 40.0 km ², of which 0.1 km ² water surface.

History

The foundation of the city dates back to Spanish immigrants who came from Mexico across the Rio Grande and settled here. The former name of the settlement was San Felipe del Rio. The settlement by Americans began after the American Civil War. 1883, the first post office was opened and the name in Del Rio changed. 1885 Val Verde County was formed and selected Del Rio for the county seat. 1963-1969 was built the Amistad Dam 19 km northwest of the city.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 33 867 people in 10,778 households and 8,514 families. The population density was 846.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 77.08 % White, 1.21 % African American, 0.70 % Native American, 0.49 % Asian, 0.06 % Pacific Islander residents of the 17.79 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.68% were of mixed descent, and 81.04 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 10,778 households, 42.0 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 59.3 % were married couples living together. 15.8% were single mothers and 21.0 % were non-families. 18.7 % of all households were single-person households and 8.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.09 and the average family size was 3.56 persons to.

31.7 % of the population were under 18 years old, 8.8 % from 18 to 24, 27.6% 25-44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 94.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 89.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 27,387, and the median income for a family $ 30,788. Males have a median income of $ 27,255 versus $ 17,460 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,199. 27.0 % of the population and 22.9 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 35.8 % have children under the age of 18 and 26.4 % of those 65 or older.
