Columbus is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Colorado County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located almost centrally located in the County in southeast Texas, is in the south about 90 km from the Gulf of Mexico, to the East and about 100 miles from Houston and has a total area of 7.3 km ² without significant water surface. A natural border city forms the north and east of the Colorado River.

History

Members of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred came to this area in 1821 and settled here. 1823 a small settlement called Beeson 's Ferry or Beeson 's Ford had formed, named after Benjamin Beeson, one of the first settlers and operator of the ferry across the Colorado River. 1835, the town was renamed in Columbus.

At the time of the Texas Revolution (1835-1836) lived here about 25 families, including William D. Lacey, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. 1836 Columbus became the county seat.

Demography

According to the census of 2000, there were 3916 people in 1,497 households and 946 families. The population density was 536.2 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 66.55 % White, 19.94 % African American, 0.36 % Native American, 0.33 % Asian, 0.03 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 10.52% from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.27% were of mixed descent, and 17.62 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1497 households 28.4 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.8 % were married couples living together. 14.0% were single mothers and 36.8 % were non-families. 33.0 % of all households were single-person households, and 19.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size amounted to 3.04.

23.4% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.2 % from 18 to 24, 24.2% 25-44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 24.5 % who are 65 years or older were. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 84.2 males.

The median income for a household was $ 29,175, and the median income for a family $ 40,197. Males have a median income of $ 30,104 versus $ 19,077 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,822. 20.5 % of the population and 15.5 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 32.7 % have children under the age of 18 and 16.1 % of those 65 or older.
