Palestine is a city in Anderson County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States. In the city there is also the county seat ( county seat ).

Geography

The city is located in east-central Texas, at the junction of U.S. Highways 79 and 287 in the center of the county, about 180 km southeast of Dallas, 230 kilometers north of Houston and has a total area of 46.3 km ², of which 0.5 km ² water surface.

Economy

The most important employer is the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, which employs over 3900 employees and a cargo center of the company Wal- Mart with approximately 1600 employees.

History

Was named the city after Palestine, Illinois, the place of origin of the first settlers. In January 2003, Palestine was one of those places, falling down upon the ruins of some of the injured space shuttle " Columbia ".

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 17,598 people in 6,641 households and 4,582 families. The population density was 383.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 64.60 % White, 24.77 % African American, 0.49 % Native American, 0.79 % Asian, 0.07 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 7.90% from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.37% were of mixed descent, and 14.88 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 6,641 households, 34.9 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.2 % were married couples living together. 18.0% were single mothers and 31.0 % were non-families. 28.0 % of all households were single-person households, and 13.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size amounted to 3.13.

29.1% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.2 % from 18 to 24, 25.6% 25-44, 20.0 % from 45 to 64, and 16.2 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 34 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 84.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 78.2 males.

The median income for a household was $ 30,497, and the median income for a family $ 35,806. Males have a median income of $ 28,331 versus $ 20,662 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,514. 20.7 % of the population and 16.6 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 27.7 % have children under the age of 18 and 14.6 % of those 65 or older.
