Jasper is a city and the county seat ( county seat ) of Jasper County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located almost in the extreme east of Texas at U.S. Highways 96 and 190, about 25 miles from Louisiana is removed and has a total area of 26.9 km ², of which 0.1 km ² water surface.

History

Was named the place after William Jasper, a hero of the American Revolutionary War.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 8,247 people in 2,888 households and 1,992 families. The population density was 307.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 48.26 % White, 43.91 % African American, 0.44 % Native American, 0.70 % Asian, 0.02 % Pacific Islander residents from the 5.18 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 1.49% were of mixed descent, and 8.56 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,888 households, 34.4 % had children under the age of 18 living with them. 44.7 % were married couples living together. 20.3% were single mothers and 31.0 % were non-families. 27.6 % of all households were single-person households, and 12.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size amounted to 3.14.

26.7 % of the population were under 18 years old, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 28.1% 25-44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.9 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 98.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 96.5 males.

The median income for a household was $ 24,671, and the median income for a family $ 32,242. Males had a median income of $ 28,432 versus $ 17,266 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,997. 28.4 % of the population and 23.3 % of families are below the poverty line. Of which 34.3 % have children under the age of 18 and 23.3 % of those 65 or older.
