List of counties in California

The U.S. state of California is now divided into 58 counties. These are responsible for all elections, property taxes, Public certifications and the local jurisdiction. In addition, it sets the Sheriff as a police organ, which is responsible outside the autonomous cities for the enforcement of the law. In San Francisco are merged city and Countyverwaltung. The County Sheriff is primarily responsible for the administration of the prison yet.

Construction of the first counties of California

On 4 January 1850, the Constitutional Commission of California proposed the establishment of 18 counties. These were Benicia, Butte, Fremont, Los Angeles, Mariposa, Monterey, Mount Diablo, Oro, Redding, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Jose, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Sonoma, and Sutter. On April 22, Branciforte, Calaveras, Coloma, Colusi, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Trinity, and Yuba were added and Benicia was renamed Solano, Coloma in El Dorado, Fremont, Yolo, Mt Diablo in Contra Costa, San Jose, Santa Clara, Oro to Tuolumne, and Redding in Shasta. The actions of the first legislature of California then was further renamed Branciforte County to Santa Cruz, Colusi in Colusa, and Yola in Yolo.

The youngest County California's Imperial County, it was built in 1907.

Former counties

  • Klamath County in 1851 spun off a portion of Trinity County, in 1874 it was divided into Humboldt County and Siskiyou County after 1857 parts were already gone up in Del Norte.
  • Pautah County was created in 1852 from a territory that actually belonged to Nevada because the state of California ran out of it, Congress would reallocate the land accordingly, which did not happen. Officially the County that never existed in 1859 abolished.
