Stanislaus County, California

Stanislaus County is a county located in the state of California. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Modesto.

Geography

The County is located between Stockton and Fresno in the Central Valley and borders clockwise to the counties: Calaveras County, Tuolumne County, Merced County, Santa Clara County and San Joaquin County.

History

Stanislaus County was formed in 1854 from portions of Tuolumne County. The county is named for the Stanislaus River. This river was first discovered by Gabriel Moraga in 1806 and later named as " Rio Estanislao " in honor of Estanislao, a proselytizing chief of a local tribe, a group of Indians against the Mexicans led as a renegade, until he finally defeated by Mariano Vallejo 1826. His baptismal name Estanislao is the Spanish transcription of Stanislaus, the Latinized name of a Polish, Catholic saints of the 11th century, namely Stanislaw, Bishop of Krakow.

According to the census of 2000, there were 446 997 people in Stanislaus County. There were 145 146 households and 109 585 families. The population density was 116 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 69.33 % White, 2.58 % African American, 1.27 % Native American, 4.22 % Asian, 0.34 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 16.82% from other races groups; 5.44% were descended from two or more races. 31.74 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 145 146 households out of which 41.20 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.00 % were married couples living together, 13.70% had a female householder with no husband. 24.50 % were non-families. 19.40% of all households and 7.90% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 3.03 and the average family size was 3.47 persons.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 31.10 % under the age of 18, 9.80 % from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44 years, 19.50% between 45 and 64 years and 10.40 % were 65 years old or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 96.80 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.40 males.

The median income for a household was $ 40,101, and the median income for a family was $ 44,703. Males have a median income of $ 36,969, women $ 26,595. The per capita income was $ 16,913. 16.00% percent of the population and 12.30% of families are below the poverty line. 20.50% of those under age 18 and 8.80% were 65 years or older.
