Butte County, California

Butte County is a county located in the north of the U.S. state of California. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Oroville.

Butte (from English butte - Butte ) is derived from a hill with a pointed summit, which lies in the southern part of the county. Largest city with 73 558 inhabitants is Chico, a university town with the Chico State University. It is located in the north of the county.

Butte is rural. Approximately 1.5 hours drive south is Sacramento, the capital of the State of California.

According to the census of 2000, there were 203 171 people in Butte County. There were 79 566 households, and 49,410 families. The population density was 48 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.52 % White, 1.39 % African American, 1.90 % Native American, 3.32 % Asian, 0.15 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 4.82% from other races groups; 3.90% were descended from two or more races. 10.50% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 79 566 households out of which 28.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them. 46.70 % were married couples living together, 11.20% had a female householder with no husband. 37.90 % were non-families. 27.20% of all households and 11.10% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.02.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 24.00 % under the age of 18, 13.60 % from 18 to 24, 24.80 % from 25 to 44 years, 21.80% between 45 and 64 years and 15.80 % were 65 years old or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.10 males, 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.60 males.

The median income for a household was $ 31,924, and the median income for a family was $ 41,010. Males had a median income of $ 34,137, women $ 25,393. The per capita income was $ 17,517. 19.80% percent of the population and 12.20% of families are below the poverty line. 23.80% of those under age 18 and 7.30 % were 65 years or older.
