Santa Barbara County, California

Santa Barbara County is a county located on the Pacific Ocean in the U.S. state of California. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Santa Barbara.

Geography

Santa Barbara County borders the counties Ventura County and San Luis Obispo County. In the west the coast is on the Pacific.

According to the census of 2000, there were 399 347 people in Santa Barbara County. There were 136 622 households and 89 487 families. The population density was 56 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.72 % White, 2.30 % African American, 1.20 % Native American, 4.09 % Asian, 0.18 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 15.20% from other races groups; 4.31% were descended from two or more races. 34.22 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 136 622 households out of which 32.40 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.40 % were married couples living together, 10.00 % had a female householder with no husband. 34.50 % were non-families. 24.30% of all households were made and 9.40% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.33 persons.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 24.90 % under the age of 18, 13.30 % from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44 years, 20.10% between 45 and 64 years and 12.70% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 100.10 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.10 males.

The median income for a household was $ 46,677, and the median income for a family was $ 54,042. Males had a median income of $ 37,997, women $ 29,593. The per capita income was $ 23,059. 14.30 % percent of the population and 8.50% of families are below the poverty line. 16.30 % of those under age 18 and 6.20% were 65 years or older.
