Contra Costa County is a county in California. It is located in the Bay Area of San Francisco. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Martinez.

History

Contra Costa County was one of the Gründungscountys California and was created in 1850. The original name was "Mount Diablo County ". Parts of the area were 1853 Alameda County.

The name of Contra Costa is Spanish and means " towards the coast ." Contra Costa County is located on the San Francisco opposite, eastern side of San Francisco Bay.

In the Port Chicago disaster on the southern coast of Suisun Bay on July 17, 1944 exploded the two vessels' EA Bryan "and" Quinault Victory " at the ammunition transfer. In the disaster 320 people died, including 202 African-American recruits. On August 9, 1944 three weeks after the disaster, the sailors refused to continue loading without proper training. The mutiny resulted in one of the largest military tribunals in U.S. history.

On May 7, 1964 fell Pacific Air Lines Flight 773 from near San Ramon, after a passenger had killed the cockpit crew and then the driverless machine crashed into a mountainside. The impact all 44 people were killed on board.
