Sonoma is a city in Sonoma County in the U.S. state of California, United States, with 9,700 inhabitants ( 2004). The city is located north of the bay of San Pablo. The metropolitan area has a size of 6.9 km ². From June 14 to July 9, 1846, the city was the capital of the Republic of California.
Sonoma belongs to one of three U.S. cities in the Cittaslow international movement, which has set itself the quality of life in cities to the destination.
History
Colonization
The region of Sonoma was originally the settlement area of the Miwok, Pomo, and the Wintun. Even today, many Indians live in the area, although since then six states were erected over the place. The village originated from the Sonoma Mission San Francisco Solano, which was founded in 1823 as the last and northernmost of the Spanish missions in California by Father Joseph Altimira. It was thus the northern end of El Camino Real, the trade route between the missions of San Diego along the coast to Sonoma. Shortly after the establishment she was, like many other missions secularized. Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo was built next to the disbanded Mission, the Presidio of Sonoma.
Republic of California
The Presidio of Sonoma was the starting point of the so-called Bear Flag Revolt, in which an independent California Republic was proclaimed on June 14, 1846, because the white immigrants in Sonoma with the Mexican government did not agree. The republic lasted only 25 days. However, their flag was the model of today's flag of California.
Viniculture
Sonoma is considered the birthplace of the California wine. The first vines were grown here by the missionaries.
Sonoma as a film set
In Sonoma Valley were parts of the movie Scream - Scream! rotated, namely the scenes at school and on the last party. In addition, a race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup takes place at the Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma annually.
It was also here among other things with the filming location for the series Falcon Crest. The City Hall was there the prison.
