Merced is a city in Merced County in the U.S. state of California with 80,600 inhabitants ( 2008). The metropolitan area has a size of 51.4 km ². The city, founded in 1889 has grown significantly in recent years, as high land prices in the coastal regions make living in the interior attractive. The city has a good transport connection: Both to Yosemite National Park in the east and the Pacific Ocean at Monterey in the West are both less than two hours drive away. There is a rail connection for the trains of Amtrak and an airfield (Merced Municipal Airport ).

In September 2005, the University of California, Merced took on their lecture mode.
