Monahans is the capital and the county seat ( county seat ) of the Ward County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States. A very small part of the city belongs to the neighboring Winkler County.

Geography

The city is located at the junction of Interstate 20 to the Farm Road 18, approximately 55 km south-west of Odessa, in West Texas, about 40 km south-east of the south-eastern corner of New Mexico and has a total area of 64.3 km ² without significant water surface.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 6,821 people in 2,496 households and 1,837 families. The population density was 106.2 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 79.30 % White, 5.16 % African American, 0.35 % Native American, 0.35 % Asian, 0.04 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 12.51 % from other ethnic groups. Approximately 2.29% were of mixed descent, and 43.66 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,496 households, 38.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.4 % were married couples living together. 13.5 % were single mothers and 26.4 % were non-families. 24.3 % of all households were single-person households, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.19 persons to.

30.3% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.2 % from 18 to 24, 25.7 % 25-44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.3 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 93.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 89.4 males.

The median income for a household was $ 30,349, and the median income for a family $ 36,726. Males have a median income of $ 31,307 versus $ 18,086 for females.
