McAllen is a city in Hidalgo County in the U.S. state of Texas. The city is located in the south of Texas and is about eight miles from the Mexican border.

McAllen is also called the city of palm trees. They got this name due to the many palm trees that are located in the city. From October to March, almost double the population of the city because many retirees from the north move south, there to enjoy the tropical climate, the Mexican culture, golf courses and much more.

History

John McAllen founded in 1904 on the present site of the city of West McAllen. 1905, a connection with the St. Louis Brownsville & Mexico Railroad was established. 1907, the city was founded in East McAllen. When in 1910 the towns merged, several shops, churches and residences were built. In addition, there was now also a newspaper.

1920, the city had about 5,300 inhabitants. The town grew steadily and in 1960 had been 32 728 inhabitants. In the 1960s, the population grew not as strong. For this, a new town hall was built, the library was enlarged and opened a museum. From 1970 to 1980, the population doubled. Now, the city had 66,281 inhabitants. In 1976, the La Plaza Mall was opened. This is the largest shopping mall in the metropolitan area of ​​McAllen - Edinburg - Mission.
