Grassy Key

Grassy Key, Florida is an island. It belongs to the Middle Keys of Florida Keys. About the island leads the Overseas Highway. Grassy Key is MM57 -60, between the Conch Keys and Fat Deer Key. It is the northernmost island, about extending the city Marathon ( Florida).

According to the census 2000, the island included the block from 2045 to 2116 the Census Tracts 9710 in Monroe County ( Florida). This resulted in the sum of a population of 974 on an area of 3.65 km ².

History of the name

In the records of Johann Wilhelm Gerhard Brahm from 1772 Grassy Key was called " Ellis Iceland ". The handwritten records of F.H. Gerdes from 1849 the island has been called the " Grassy Keys ". Appeared on the name Grassy Key also in the records of a fire in the ship Concordia in 1855. The island's name is derived from an old settler, not the grass cover.

The Dolphin Research Center is located on Grassy Key in the amount MM59.
