Green Islands (Papua New Guinea)

The Green Islands ( Green German islands, originally Sir Charles Hardy Islands ) are a group of two atolls in the central Pacific Ocean. Politically include the two atolls to the Autonomous Region of Bougainville of the island nation of Papua New Guinea, where they form the LLG (Local Level Government) Nissan.

Geography

The atolls lie geographically between the Bismarck Archipelago in the northwest and the Solomon Islands to the southeast. The distance to the island of New Ireland in the west is 110 km, to the Feni Islands in the north-west and 58 km to the offshore island of Bougainville Buka in the southeast 63 km. The Green Islands consist of the smaller Pinipel Atoll in the northwest and the larger Nissan Atoll in the South East, which are just two kilometers away from each other. The total land area is around 45 km ², main island of the same name is Nissan Atoll. The Green Islands have a total of 5725 inhabitants ( 2000 census ), of which 4824 live on Nissan and 901 Pinipel.

In geological terms, the atolls Nissan and Pinipel are the prolonged winter on the sea parts of the same seamount. So make a double Atoll.
