Grégoire Kayibanda

Grégoire Kayibanda ( born May 1, 1924 in Tare; † 15 December 1976 in an unknown location ) was a Rwandan politician. Between 1961 and 1973 he was president of the country.

Kayibanda came from the south of the country. He was a leader of the Rwandan struggle for independence from Belgium. He belonged to the Hutu and led this population after independence to power in the state.

Kayibanda took over on 26 October 1961, the Office of the Rwandan president and led the country on July 1, 1962 on independence. He stood at the head of the state, until his overthrow on 5 July 1973. Was succeeded by a military coup his cousin, Defense Minister Major General Juvenal Habyarimana. Kayibanda was allowed to starve to death together with his wife at an undisclosed location.
