The Grevillea banksii is an indigenous Australian species of the genus Grevilleen ( Grevillea ) in the family of the silver tree plants ( Proteaceae ).

Description

The plant grows as a shrub or small tree, reaching heights of growth up to 7 meters. The silvery green leaves are pinnate with 3-11 leaflets deeply divided. The individual leaflets are linear to lanceolate, 5-10 cm long and 1 cm wide.

The flowers are bright red to creamy white; they are terminally in up to 15 cm long inflorescences. Grevillea banksii flowers over most of the year, but mainly in winter and spring.

Use

The Grevillea banksii was once a popular ornamental plant from which there were many varieties in cultivation. Now, however, it has been supplanted by newer Grevillea hybrids with smaller stature or prominent notice or longer lasting blooms from this role.

System

The first description of Robert Brown was published in 1810. The specific epithet banksii was chosen in honor of the English botanist Joseph Banks.
