Grewioideae

Kapländische room Linde ( Sparrmannia africana)

The subfamily of Grewioideae belongs to the mallow family ( Malvaceae ). The 25 genera with about 770 species are mostly native to the tropical areas of the world.

Origin of the name

Name -giving genus of the subfamily is Grewia with 290 species. This is named after the English botanist Nehemiah Grew ( 1628-1682 ). There has been described the subfamily of Grewioideae 1999 by Bayer et al. as part of its new division or displacement of the Linde family ( Tiliaceae ) to the mallow family ( Malvaceae ).

System

The genera of the subfamily Grewioideae were formerly the Linde plants. With the systematic newly gained insights from molecular biological research, the subfamily of Grewioideae was newly formed and - incorporated in the mallow family - together with the new subfamily of Tilioideae. As a " sister family" with similar characteristics and systematic development, the Byttnerioideae considered the most well known in the genus Theobroma is the cacao tree.

Botanical description

The representatives of the Grewioideae typically have free sepals. Nectar glands can sit on the petals or on the Androgynophor. The stamens are not grown in most representatives of Grewioideae.

Genera

There are about 25 genera in this subfamily:
