Grey Towers Castle

Grey Towers Castle in Glenside, Pennsylvania, is the former residence of William Welsh Harrison, a wealthy US- American sugar producers and co-owner of the Franklin Sugar Refining Company. The stately magnificent building was built on the basis of Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, England by the architectural firm of Horace Trumbauer 1893-1897; Chief designer at the time was Frank Seeburger (up to 1909). Grey Towers Castle has 40 rooms on three floors, which extends the large main hall for easy access to the roof. Preserved in a French Renaissance style interior design was carried out by Trumbauer in collaboration with William Baumgarten & Company of New York.

William Welsh Harrison lived here until his death in 1927. His widow sold Grey Towers Castle including the approximately 60 hectares ( 138 acres) of grounds in 1929 to the then Beaver College, since 2001 Arcadia University. The building now serves among other things as an administrative building on the campus of the University. It is classified as a National Historic Landmark since February 4, 1985.
