Greyhound (Band)

Greyhound was a reggae band from the UK who was with her ​​light pop songs of the first reggae artist with chart success outside of Jamaica in the early 1970s.

History

Greyhound emerged from a band called "The Rudies " ( Sonny Binns & the Rudies and Freddie Notes & the Rudies ), which included, inter alia, Freddie Notes and Danny Smith. Even under the name "The Tillermen " and "The All Stars " they took in the 1960s on records. As The Rudies they released cover versions of well-known hits as Patches by Clarence Carter and Montego Bay by Bobby Bloom. After Notes had left the lineup and was replaced by Glenroy Oakley, they changed their name to Greyhound.

The first single on the Trojan label under the new name was in the summer of 1971, Black & White, also a cover version, in the original 1956 by Sammy Davis Jr. and written by David Arkin and Earl Robinson. Greyhound interpreted the song, however, in the reggae rhythm and ended up with their version of a Top Ten hit in the UK. The title that explores the equality of people as in a classroom ("The ink is black, the page is white, together we learn to read and write " ) and overcoming racism teaches remained the biggest hit for Greyhound. About a year later the group Three Dog Night adapted similar to Greyhounds reggae version of the song also, and thus came to number 1 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100

Greyhound managed with Moon River, a song by Henry Mancini from Breakfast at Tiffany's, and I Am What I Am In early 1972 two more minor hits in the UK. Appeared in 2003 on Trojan Records in the Rough Trade Distribution, the " best-of " compilation Black & White, which also contains tracks from Sonny Binns & the Rudies, Freddie Notes & the Rudies, The Tillermen and Des All Stars.
