Greyton

Province

Greyton is a small town in the municipality Theewaterskloof, district Overberg, Western Cape Province in South Africa. 2011, it had 2780 inhabitants. It lies at an altitude of 331 meters above sea level at the foot of the mountain chain Riviersonderend Mountains on the eponymous river ( German: "river without end "). Caledon Cape Town is 30 kilometers and 150 kilometers away.

The city is located in the South Coast Ecoregion Forelands ( with Lowland fynbos and Renosterveld; WWF ecoregion AT1202 ) that ranges from Caledon in the west to Mossel Bay in the east.

Originally an agricultural settlement, have in recent years, artists and wealthy dropouts from Cape Town discovered the city for themselves. Many of the existing historic buildings have been extensively renovated, there are art galleries and a highly regarded music festival that takes place every year in summer.

History

Before the arrival of Dutch settlers in 1652, the Overberg region of Khoikhoi tribes had settled, which are known as Hessequa and Attaqua. Greyton 1854 was founded by Herbert Vigne on the farm Weltevreden, municipal law, they got 1910. It is named after Sir George Edward Grey, the Governor of the Cape Province on 5 December 1854 to 5 November 1856.

As in Swellendam leads a historic Leiwater - drainage system of the city. This is to open channels, is conducted through the community own on some days of the week water.
