History

The Old High German place name semolina refers to a gravel bed load or a hallway with coarse sand as often occurs in stretches of bank of the river Mur. Due to its exposed, unprotected location outside the city walls and because of the risk of flooding the Gries has been exploited for a long time of rafters, simple artisans and traders as an inexpensive residential and commercial area. Only in the 17th century, the solid building began to enforce. The district has maintained its multi-cultural character over the centuries. To date, he is also known for its red-light scene.

Traffic

The center of the district is the Griesplatz. This is the central transfer point of the city bus lines 31, 32, 33, 39, 40 and 67 at various regional bus lines in the western and southern Styria. With the exception of bus route 67 bus routes from all other Griesplatz lead directly to Jakominiplatz.
