GrigoraÈ™ Dinicu

Grigoraş Ionică Dinicu, Romanian pronunciation: [ grigoraʃ ionikə diniku ] ( born April 3, 1889 in Bucharest, † March 28, 1949 or August 5, 1948 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian composer and violinist of Roma descent. He is known for his often played piece Hora staccato. Jascha Heifetz thought he was the best violinist he had ever heard.

Dinicus father's name was actually Ionică Dinu and later called himself Ionică Dinicu. He came from Piteşti and his mother was the daughter Anghelus Dinicus (around 19th century ) and sister of Romanian musicians Dimitrie A. Dinicu ( 1868-1936 ), Gheorghe A. Dinicu ( 1863-1930 ) and Nicolae A. Dinicu (1879 - 1954), who have all played a major role in the Bucharest Music around the turn of the century in 1900. Dinicu studied from 1902 to 1906 at the Conservatory in Bucharest violin with Carl Flesch and composition. He also received a scholarship to the Vienna University of Music, but it was not allowed to avail it, because he was a Roma. This he has never forgotten. From 1906 to 1940 he worked as a violinist in various orchestras, concerted guest on traveling abroad as soloist and conductor, but also occurred in hotels, restaurants or cafés in Bucharest or Western Europe. His pieces are usually written for violin and piano, although they were later arranged for other combinations. The works often contain elements of Romanian folk music and gypsy music. The best-known pieces are:

  • Hora staccato ( Hora Staccato ), 1906, arranged for violin and piano by Jascha Heifetz, arranged for orchestra by Pancho Wladigerows ( 1899-1978 ), arranged for coloratura soprano and orchestra by Constantin Bobescus ( 1899-1992 ),
