Grímsey

Grimsey, a small island 40 km north of the north coast of Iceland and belongs to Icelandic region Norðurland eystra. The island is located right on the Polar circle and represents the northernmost inhabited region of Iceland

Until 31 May 2009, the island formed a distinct rural community ( Isl Grímseyjarhreppur ). Since then, it belongs to the town of Akureyri.

The main livelihood of the islanders is fishing.

Geography

Grimsey is located directly on the Arctic Circle, which passes through the island. Thus, the island is the only place of Iceland, where the midnight sun can be seen. The highest elevation is 105 m above sea level. The closest island is Flatey, 39.4 km to the south. The nearest town on the main island of Iceland is Þönglabakki in County Suður - Þingeyjarsýsla. The area of ​​the island is 5.3 km2.

Traffic

The island has a small airport ( IATA code GRY, ICAO code BIGR ), which is served from Akureyri. The only place on the island is located south of the runway.

From Dalvik from there is a three times weekly ferry service from Akureyri. The journey takes about three hours, much longer during a storm. It is driven in almost any weather.

Birdwatching

On the island of cats and dogs are not allowed, and so can be very good bird watching, including puffins, razorbills, guillemots, guillemots and several species of gulls. Also, the little auk was sighted there before.

Vegetation and climate

The vegetation is quite sparse and tundrenähnlich, only in summer the meadows turn green. Trees do not grow on Grimsey, only single low shrubs.
