Griselda is an opera seria in three acts by Alessandro Scarlatti after the libretto by Apostolo Zeno. It was completed in 1721.

Formation

The opera, which was originally called La Griselda, was completed in 1721 as the last opera of Scarlatti and premiered in the same year in Rome at the Teatro Capra Nico. It was written by Scarlatti, together with three other operas during his recent three -year stay in Rome (from 1718). One of these operas was Marco Attilio Regolo. The other two operas are lost. Scarlatti appearing on the manuscript that La Griselda was his 114th opera, which would mean that almost half of his operas have disappeared entirely.

Action

Act I

At the Sicilian court: Before starting the actual story King Gualtiero marries a shepherdess named Griselda. Court and the people are here about equally outraged, so Gualtiero the first child of this marriage, Constanza, his friend Corrado, entrusted to the Prince of Apulia and lets announced publicly that he had killed it and will leave Griselda.

Ottone, a member of the court, now announces the arrival of Gualtiero new bride, the other is not, however, as his own daughter Constanza, but what nobody knows. It comes with Corrado's brother Roberto, in whom she is in love and who loves them back, and the two are very dismayed by Gualtiero plans. Ottone, in turn, hopes that his long -held love for Griselda is now heard from her. However, it refuses and leaves with her son Everardo the yard. Constanza is guided in their new apartments.

Second Act

Griselda, now in her old home in the country, is not left out of Ottone advances in peace. Corrado comes to Griselda with the message that he should Everardo blame the wild animals. However, he takes pity and lets Griselda her child. Then explains Ottone, he had a contract to kill the child.

Act Three

Back in the palace Griselda is still beset by Ottone. She tries to convince Constanza to love Gualtiero. Roberto asks in desperation Constanza to kill him. Ottone admits his love for Gualtiero Constanza. This promises Ottone 'll get Griselda to wife when he got married Constanza. It prohibits Griselda crying and praising at the same time their strength. Roberto says goodbye to Constanza. Griselda tried in vain to ask Gualtiero for the lovers. The wedding is being prepared. Gualtiero can publicly announced that Griselda Ottone would be given to the woman. Griselda replied that she would rather die. Since Gualtiero hugging his wife, who has now passed this test of their honesty. Ottone admits to have incited the people out of love for Griselda. Gualtiero reveals the secret of Constanzas origin.
