Grzimek's Animal Life Encyclopedia

Grzimek's Animal Life is a thirteen -volume Animal Encyclopedia, published 1967-1972 by Bernhard Grzimek from the publisher Helmut Kindler in Zurich. The work is considered one of the most comprehensive encyclopedias animal in the world and has been translated into many languages. It includes more than 8000 representations of animals, 1300 color plates (illustrated among others by William Self, Erich Dittmann, Zdeněk Burian, Paul Barruel, Hermann Heinzel, Jürgen Ritter, Heinz- Sigurd Raethel and Friedrich Reimann ) and over 2000 illustrations in the text. Bernhard Grzimek won many well-known zoologists as authors for his work, including Theodor Haltenorth, Wolfgang violence, Heinz -Georg Klös, Konrad Lorenz, Heinz Heck, Lutz Heck, Heinrich Dathe, Jean Dorst, Constantine Walter Benson, Otto Koehler, Herbert Bruns, Andrew John Berger Werner Chocoholics, Gerlof Fokko Mees, Otto Kraus, Bernhard Rensch, Ernst Sutter, Irenaeus Eibl- Eibesfeldt, Helmut Sick, Claus King, Günther Niethammer, Adolf Portmann, Joachim Steinbach, Ernst Schäfer, Gerard Frederick van Tets, Lester Leroy Short, Nagamichi Kuroda, Wilhelm Meise, Heini Hediger, Erich Thenius, Erna Mohr and many others. In its construction, the Encyclopedia of the (then) modern zoological nomenclature follows.

The following volumes have been published:

  • Volume 1 ( 1971) Invertebrates deals with the protozoa, arachnids, coelenterates and worms.
  • Volume 2 ( 1969 ) Insects, the insects and urine sects on the topic.
  • Volume 3 ( 1970 ), molluscs and echinoderms is about echinoderms, bivalves, gastropods and cephalopods.
  • Volume 4 ( 1970 ) In fish I it comes to fish, such as sharks, rays, sturgeons and Others
  • Volume 5 ( 1970 ) Fish II and amphibians has, inter alia, with bass as well with the amphibians.
  • Volume 6 ( 1971) Reptiles is dedicated to dinosaurs and modern reptiles.

Between August 1979 and April 1980 the Association of German paperback publisher ( dtv ) published a license issue, which was an unaltered reprint of Kindler edition 1975-1977. Due to the much cheaper paperback presentation she found a particularly wide distribution.

Under the direction of Michael Hutchins, a 17 -volume updated and greatly expanded version of the original English edition ( Grzimek 's animal life encyclopedia 2nd edition ) was created, it was moved by Gale Cengage 2003. In this edition particular emphasis was placed on updating the zoological systematics. Since autumn 2009 Gale Cengage offers the encyclopedia also in an online version for subscribers.

In 2008, the entire German -language edition was released by the publishing house Zweitausendeins on DVD.
