Gerlof Fokko Mees

Gerlof Fokko Mees ( born June 16, 1926 in Velsen, The Netherlands, † March 31, 2013 in Busselton, Western Australia ) was a Dutch ornithologist and ichthyologist.

Life and work

Mees spent 1946 to 1949 his military service in the Dutch East Indies, where his interest began for spectacle birds. Mees studied biology at Leiden University with the degree ( Kandidatexamen ) 1953 and 1957 at Hilbrand Boschma ( 1893-1976 ) PhD (A systematic review of the Indo- Australia Zosteropidae ). After that, he was from 1955 to 1957 assistant at the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke History (now Naturalis ) in Leiden in the Department Ornithology ( and at times even fish ), where he visited December 1956 on behalf of the zoo of Rotterdam New Guinea until May 1957.

From 1958 to 1963 he was curator of vertebrates at the Western Australian Museum in Perth. In 1963, he returned after the death of the curator of birds at the Natural History Museum in Leiden Christoffel George Alexander Young ( 1905-1962 ) back there and became its successor, a position he held until his retirement in 1991. During this time he undertook extensive expeditions to the Mariana Islands, to Indonesia, to Africa, to the Norfolk Island and South America. After his retirement in 1991 he returned to Australia.

The main research field of Mees was the family of white-eyes, about which he has written three books. Mees was a member of the International Ornithological Committee.

In 1961 he erstbeschrieb the salamander fish ( Lepidogalaxias salamandroides ).

After Mees Taxa as Brachyrhamdia meesi that Meesnachtschwalbe ( Caprimulgus meesi ) and Ninox rufa named meesi ( a subspecies of the Red Buschkauzes ).
