Guanacaste Province

Guanacaste is the northwestern province of Costa Rica. The province covers an area of ​​10,141 km ² and has a population of 326 953 ( 2011). Capital of the province is Liberia.

Geography and Nature

Guanacaste is bordered to the west by the Pacific Ocean. The northern border is the border with Nicaragua. Eastern neighboring province of Alajuela, Puntarenas southeast.

Because of the relatively dry climate of Guanacaste is the center of the Costa Rican livestock. The Golfo de Papagayo on the Pacific coast 's main development area of tourism. This increasingly large hotels are mainly North American package tourists.

At the same time, a broad strip, protected from the western tip at Cape Santa Helena to the active volcanic peaks of Orosi and the Rincón de la Vieja, under the name of Area de Conservación Guanacaste since 1999 by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Some of the more than 300 stone spheres of Costa Rica were found in the province.
