The place was marked by centuries of agriculture. 1865 to connect to the steam ship was set to Bergen. To ensure that the upturn began as a small tourist town. In addition to the steep, almost vertical rock walls that surround the city, the drive to Stalheim was by horse and cart, the attraction of the place. Even today, the place is still living from tourism. Regular ferries connect Gudvangen with other places on the Sognefjord. In the summer, cruise ships visit on their journey through the Nærøyfjorden the small town.
