Guillaume-François Berthier

Guillaume François Berthier ( born April 7, 1704 Issoudun, † December 15, 1782 in Bourges ) was a French Jesuit and writer.

Life

He taught philosophy at Rennes and Rouen, then theology in Paris. From 1745 to 1762 he was editor of the Journal de Trévoux, the scholarly journal of the Jesuits. He led violent clashes with Voltaire and the encyclopedist. Voltaire had him in a satirical die prematurely at the poison of his own writings. A against Rousseau's Social Contract You directional book was not published until 1789, Berthier interrupted the work on it, as Rousseau's work was condemned anyway.

End of 1762 the heir to the throne appointed him librarian of the Royal Court Library and tutor of his sons, the later kings Louis XVI. and Louis XVIII. When the possession of the French Jesuits in 1764 was confiscated, he settled in Offenburg. Ten years later he retired to Bourges.

From 1745 to 1749 he had several volumes of a large-scale history of the French Church written ( Histoire de l' Église gallicane, the Vols 13-18 over the years 1320-1559 ). After his death, a commentary on the Psalms, a work about the Prophet Isaiah and spiritual Réflexions were published from his estate into five volumes.
