Guillermo Stirling

Eduardo Guillermo Stirling Soto ( born March 4, 1937) is a Uruguayan lawyer and politician.

From 1998 to 2004 he was Minister of the Interior under Presidents Julio María Sanguinetti and Jorge Batlle Ibáñez. In 2004 he was the presidential candidate of the Partido Colorado, but suffered the party with only 10.36 % of the vote one of the worst defeats in its history and was far behind the Partido Nacional with its leading candidate Jorge Larrañaga ( 34.3 % of the vote ) and the election winner, the Frente Amplio with the current Uruguayan President Tabaré Vázquez ( 50.4 % of the vote ). The main reasons for this defeat especially the economic crisis and an aging party leadership apply.
