Guinea-Bissau presidential election, 2012

The first round of presidential elections in Guinea- Bissau in 2012 took place in the West African state of Guinea- Bissau on March 18, 2012. A second round was prevented by a military coup, so that the elections could not lead to a democratic decision on the presidency. The military junta promised elections in two years.

The elections had become prematurely necessary after the country's president, Malam Bacai Sanha died on January 9, 2012 in Paris. The Constitution of Guinea-Bissau provides for new elections within 90 days in this case. Since Carlos Gomes Júnior ex-premier, although with more than 48 % of the vote clearly most, but not received the majority of votes, a second round of 29 April 2012 has been planned in Júnior against second placed the first round, Kumba IALA would be taken up. However IALA withdrew his candidacy after the first round because he, like other inferior candidates already in the first round of election fraud meant to discover, and no tamper- free second round expected.

On April 12, 2012, when two and a half weeks before the scheduled second round, launched a coup parts of the military of Guinea- Bissau and arrested Carlos Gomes Júnior. A few hours before the coup reaffirmed IALA and other opposition candidates who plan to boycott the second round of voting. The military command that had carried out the coup that established him with the fact that the mission of the Angolan Armed Forces to help the reform of the Guinea -Bissau armed forces ( MISANG ) had planned to overthrow the Guinea-Bissau military force. The Angolan Foreign Minister, however, had already declared three days before the coup, the withdrawal of this mission, which was finally completed at the end of May. The planned for April 29 runoff election did not take place and the military command agreed with the opposition parties (excluding the PAIGC ) on the establishment of Manuel Serifo Nhamadjo to the transition president, Rui Duarte Barros appointed transitional prime minister. For a period of one year should be no elections.
