Gulf of Gabès

The Gulf of Gabès (formerly Little Syrtis, Syrtis Minor in Latin ) is a bay on the eastern coast of Tunisia south of the Gulf of Hammamet. Traditionally, it is expected the Libyan Sea, a portion of the open Mediterranean, and forms its western area. The bay is about 100 km long and wide, and is bounded by the island of Djerba in the Southeast and Kerkenna Islands in the northeast.

A more precise definition is by a line from Ras Yonga (50 km south-west of Sfax ) in the north to Bordj Djellidj, the northwestern cape of the island of Djerba, a distance of 68.3 km.

Another source is the northern boundary point Caput Vada, in (now Ras Kapudia ). This is the city Chebba 66 km north of Sfax, and 45 km north of the Kerkenna Islands. In this definition the Kerkenna Islands extend at least to the west slightly into the Gulf of Gabes.

A historical delimitation refers to a line from the promontory (Cape) of Zeitha on meninx (today Djerba ) to the promontory of Brachodes. Brachodes is at Ras Kapudiah, and Zeitha is an ancient town on Djerba.
