Gulf of Riga

The Rigaische Gulf is a large bay of the Baltic Sea between Latvia and Estonia.

Other names are German Gulf of Riga, Estonian Liivi Laht, Latvian Rigas jūras Licis, Russian Рижский залив ( Rižskij zaliv ) and Latin magnus sine Livoniae or Mare Livonicum. Some names thus refer to the landscape Livonia and Vidzeme, adjacent to the east, and the south lies the Kurzeme coast.

From the rest of the Baltic Sea Rigaische Gulf by the Estonian islands of Saaremaa ( Osel ) is bounded ( with peninsula Sworbe ) and Moon. With the Baltic proper, the bay on the Irben Street and the Moon Sound is connected. The Rigaische Gulf has a maximum water depth of 67 meters and covers a total area of about 16,300 km ². The largest north-south extension is 174 km in east-west direction is this 137 km.

Major cities on the Gulf of Riga, the Latvian capital Riga and the Estonian port city of Pärnu ( Pärnu ).
