Gunnar Jarring

Gunnar Jarring ( born October 12, 1907 in Brunnby, Malmo longer; † 29 May 2002) was a Swedish diplomat and turkologist.

Jarring studied at Lund University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1933 for his thesis " Studies on an East Turkish phonology ". Jarring was now active in Turkish Studies at the University of Lund. After he had spent the entire 1930s, he was working for the Swedish Foreign Ministry. In 1940 he was attaché at the Swedish Embassy in Ankara. During his diplomatic career further held Jarring items in Tehran, Baghdad and Addis Ababa. In 1948, he won the Swedish Ambassador to India. From 1956 to 1958 he was Sweden's Ambassador to the United Nations and was in this period from 1957 to 1958 for Sweden in the Security Council. After the Six -Day War in 1967 and the adoption of resolution 242 of the UN Security Jarring was appointed by Secretary-General U Thant as a special envoy for the Middle East. This office he held until 1990.
