Guor Marial

Guor Marial ( born April 15, 1984 in Pan de Thon, Sudan ) is a marathon runner who ran as an independent participant at the Olympics of 2012, as South Sudan founded in 2011, did not yet have a National Olympic Committee, and therefore officially not send athletes could.

Life

Marial belongs to the people of the Dinka. In the civil war he lost by its own account 28 family members, including eight of his ten brothers died. At the age of ten years Marial was abducted by armed men and taken to a labor camp in northern Sudan. After his escape, he was kidnapped in 1995 and again forced a year for unpaid work in the family of a soldier. 1999 get him and his sister to escape to Egypt. Marial reached on 19 July 2001, the United States. He was subsequently recognized as a refugee and received an unlimited residence permit. At Iowa State University he graduated from in 2011 to study chemistry. In October 2011, he performed with a time of 2 hours 14 minutes and 32 seconds, the Olympic standard. The IOC offered Marial at first to be seconded by the NOC of the Sudan as a participant, but he refused. For nine months, he tried to reach the recording as an independent athlete before the IOC 21 July 2012 refused his request.
