Gus Caesar

Gus Caesar Cassius ( born March 5, 1966 in Tottenham, London ) is a former English footballer. As a central defender, he went through the youth departments of Arsenal FC and was considered a promising talent before his career suffered a severe setback after the sensational League Cup Final defeat against Luton Town. In the 1990s, then the triple English U-21 national team was only at considerably less ambitious clubs under contract.

Sports career

Arsenal FC (1984-1991)

After Caesar had joined Arsenal in 1982, he signed for convincing performance as indoor and outdoor defenders in February 1984 his first professional contract. Finally he came to his debut on 21 December 1985, when precipitated on the right-back Viv Anderson and coach Don Howe called the newbie for the upcoming league game against the league leaders Manchester United in the starting lineup. With no visible nervousness Caesar delivered a good performance from neutralized in-form winger Jesper Olsen and helped the " Gunners " in a 1-0 victory. But associated with the successful debut expectations seldom let themselves meet in the subsequent period. This was due to speak injury problems in the form of a battered bar and a double ankle fracture and the fact that he rarely found as a substitute for David O'Leary his way into the team and thus gained little match practice. He remained in his development between the first team and the reserve team stuck.

In the season 1986/87 he came up with a number of roles in defense after all 15 league operations before O'Leary frequently represented in the subsequent season 1987 /88 and 22 First Division games completed. But what should cater for the sporting breakthrough, led instead to a traumatic event on 24 April 1988. Caesar stood at the side of Tony Adams in the central defense of Arsenal FC who scored in the League Cup final on the underdog Luton Town. As Arsenal led almost ten minutes before the end of regular time 2-1 and looked like the sure winner, Caesar failed own penalty a simple liberation. Instead, the ball took a roundabout way to Luton's Danny Wilson equalized to make it 2-2. Thus, the change was initiated and at the last minute scored landmark 3-2 win matches for the " underdog ".

From this faux pas Caesar did not recover until the end of the season 1990/91 he came to Arsenal only in five league games for the course. Short term borrowed in the club at the end of November 1990 for two months at city rivals Queens Park Rangers, before he was released in summer 1991. Caesar saw himself later exposed repeatedly scorn and ridicule and Nick Hornby employed in 1992 in the novel Fever Pitch with his career. This Hornby Caesars failure compared with that of a musician or in his case, that of a writer and defended the thesis that talent and ambition are not sufficient.

The time after Arsenal (1991-1996)

After his time at Arsenal Caesar had brief engagements with Cambridge United and Bristol City before he moved to Scotland to Airdrieonians FC. He reached in his first season in 1991/92 the final of the Scottish FA Cup, which although with 1:2 went against the Rangers lost, but Caesar was thus his first play in a European club competition against Sparta Prague (0-1, 1:2 in the first round of the Cup Winners' Cup competition). After another year in Airdrie, he returned to England, where he was still two years in the fourth League for Colchester United on the pitch. Here, the transfer free Caesar was now a regular player and because of his experience a gain in defense and after 47 competitive games in the 1994/95 season and his first goal in English professional football at Easter 1995, he had another 29 games and even two goals in the season 1995 / 96 follow.

Outside of professional football, he played briefly for Dagenham & Redbridge, before he emigrated to Hong Kong in 1996. There he worked in the finance and insurance sector and therefore combined smaller football commitment. To this end, he also worked for the Buler Rangers as sports director and later helped in establishing an official football school of FC Arsenal in the region.
