The Gusau dam break was a dam accident in the outskirts of Gusau, capital of Zamfara State in Nigeria, which happened on the morning of September 30th 2006, a Saturday, after heavy rains. In the accident 40 people were killed and about 500 homes were destroyed, causing about 1,000 people homeless.

Since the previous day, the most rainfall had fallen, who had been in the area ever recorded. In addition, large areas of arable land were devastated that stood just before the harvest, and killed hundreds of head of cattle. Also a bridge between Gusau and the northern part of Zamfara collapsed. Approximately 700 people were temporarily housed in a school building in the neighboring town of Birnin Ruwa, where they were supplied by the Red Cross. Even drinking water wells have been contaminated by the flood. The cause of the dam failure were locks that did not work and do not open, so the dam was overflowing.

The dam was owned by the Zamfara Water Board and served Gusau with water.
