Gusset plate

A gusset is an element of the steel structure for the connection of individual carriers made of steel profiles. Gusset plates are considered articulation points of a structure, especially in a timber.

Produced a gusset of a piece of steel sheet which is provided with holes for receiving rivets or screws. The thickness of the sheet can be up to a few centimeters depending on the type of the structure. Weldment an accumulation of welds is avoided in one point by gusset plates. Result is a better flow of power along with a higher fatigue strength. For pipe frame ( Example motorcycle frame ), particularly stressed connection points can be reinforced by gusset plates, such as the steering head.

In the body shop is called gussets profile- sheet drawn components, which represent the transitions in the nodes ( A-/B-/C-/D-Säule ). Feature is the combination of several profile sections of at least two coordinate directions. Clearly recognizable are typically the gusset plates in the top node of the rear pillar (C- or D- pillar).

The most important function of a gusset plate in a structure is that the precise coincidence of the center lines of structural profiles is ensured by a gusset plate. The points of intersection of the center lines are referred to as nodes.
