Gustav Fröhlich (swimmer)

Gustav Frölich, erroneously written Cheerful, (* 1902 in Samoa, † April 17, 1968 in Sydney) was a German swimmer.

Frölich swam in the 1920s for the SC Hellas Magdeburg, one of the former swimming strongholds. On October 2, 1921 Frölich presented at the International Swim Meet in Darmstadt with a time of 1:14,0 minutes set a world record in the 100 meters backstroke on track. At the German Championships from 1921 to 1926, he was five times German champion over 100m backstroke. He was also first in 1926 in Budapest, European champion in the 100 m backstroke. The following year he finished third over the same distance.

His coach at that time was Rudolf Brewitz.

According to him, the Gustav Frölich Avenue is named in Magdeburg.
