Gustav Ising

Gustav Ising ( alternate spelling: Gustaf Ising, born 19 February 1883 in Finja; † February 5, 1960 in Danderyd ) was a Swedish particle physicists and geophysicists.

Ising made ​​his first degree filosofie candidate (Bachelor) at Uppsala University in 1903 and continued his studies at the University of Stockholm. There he earned his doctoral degree in 1919 with a dissertation entitled " Undersökningar rörande elektrometrar " ( " investigations concerning electrometer "). In 1934 he became a professor.

He is known for the invention of a concept for a linear accelerator in 1924, which is the precursor of all modern accelerators, which are based on oscillating electromagnetic fields. His release was picked up by Rolf Wideröe and put into practice what also continued the development of circular particle accelerators such as the cyclotron and the betatron in motion.

He was elected in 1935 in the Swedish Academy of Sciences, and was from 1947 to 1953 Member of the Nobel Committee for Physics, along with the previous Nobel Laureates and chairman Manne Siegbahn and Svante Arrhenius, Erik Hulthen, Axel Edvin Lindh, Ivar Waller, and Carl Borelius.
