Gustav Krklec

Gustav Krklec ( born June 23, 1899 in Karlovac, † 30 October 1977 in Zagreb) was a Croatian poet.

Life

He was the son of Gustav Krklec and Hermione Wells. The family came from the village Lupinjak, near Krapina in the Croatian Zagorje, pulled early 20th century moved for professional reasons of the father after Marusevac, a village between Varaždin and Ivanec in Croatian Zagorje, where Krklec his youth together with his siblings ( two brothers, three sisters) spent. In 1905 he went to elementary school. During school holidays he often traveled to Budapest, where relatives of his mother lived. In 1909 he came to Varaždin and visited the classical language high school. In the second year there, he lived in the then-known director of the elementary school Mihovil Palmović, the brother of the poet Andrija Palmović.

He was also the first time in contact with the poetry of Andrija Palmović who had a great influence on him. Other major influences were the poets and writers Zvonko Milković, Branko Radičević and Pero Magerl Gotalovački. Together with AB Simic and N. Milicevic called Krklec 1909, the magazine " Juriš " to life. The company failed for reasons of cost and disagreements within the group.

In 1912 he took part in a strike and demonstration against the regime of Čuvaja Banus, which is why he often relocate and had to change to work. In 1915 he moved to Zagreb and Varaždin left over. During this time, he read works by major writers such as A. Šantić, SS Kranjčević, V. Nazor, A. G. Matoš, V. Vidrić, I. Sekulic. With AB Simic he was enthusiastic about the poems of Verlaine, Rilke and the German Exspressionisten. His works he published in " Ilustrirani list" and " Koprive " under various pseudonyms: Kage, Kumordinar Žorž, spades, Pub, among others

After the seventh year of high school graduation, he went to Susak, where he graduated from high school in 1918 took off. During the stay in Susak he learned the poetry of V. Nazor know thoroughly. In the fall, he then attended the University of Agriculture in Beč. In 1919 he met the Croatian writer Tin Ujević, with whom he spent much time in Belgrade, Sarajevo, Split and in other cities. In the same year he married his wife Persis Karsnijević, with whom he was married until 1925. 1921 came his son Srda to the world, but which died four years later. In Zemun was born in 1922 his daughter Gordana. In September 1941 he moved to Zemun and married on October 1, his second wife Mirjana Jovanovic. 1947 his daughter Catherine was born.

In 1976 he became seriously ill and died in October 1977. He was buried translated at the Zagreb cemetery Mirogoj on November 2, 1977

Work

In 1915 he published songs and poems in the magazine " Šišmiš ", usually under the pseudonim Kage. In 1920 he published his first and only novel Beskućnici and the same year he published his second collection of poems Srebrena cesta. 1923 Krklec dealt more and more with the translation. It translates I. racing (the Council ), Erich Kästner ( Emil i detektivi ) and others 1926, his collection Ljubav ptica in Belgrade, for which he was awarded. He then traveled to Paris, where he met Isaac Babel, Ilya Ehrenburg and Ernest Hemingway. In 1951 he published the collection Lirska petoljetka, 1954 the book Lica i krajolici, 1955, the collection Zubor života and 1961 Izabrane pjesme. In 1969 he received the award Vladimir Nazor for his life's work. In 1970 he designed picture books for children. In the same year was a children's film, turned to the texts from the Majmun i naočale collection. In 1971, his book PISCI i Djela. His poems have been translated into German, French, Hungarian, Czech, English.

Honors

In Zagreb, a primary school is named after him.
