Gustave Reese

Gustave Reese ( born November 29, 1899 in New York City; † September 7, 1977 in Berkeley ) was an American musicologist.

Reese taught mainly in New York. His research focuses on the music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance music. His most important publications are the Music in the Middle Ages between 1940 and Music in the Renaissance from the year 1954. Both works are still among the most important works in the respective subject area.

Life

Originally Reese studied law at New York University, where he graduated in 1921. He then began studying music he could quit in 1930 as a Bachelor of Music ( BM, B.Mus. , Or Mus.B ). Three years before this degree, he started to teach at the NYU Music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance music, which he did until 1974. He retired in 1973. 1934 Reese was co-founder of the "American Musicological Society " ( AMS), which he chaired from 1950 to 1952. He held as a position in the International Musicological Society (IMS). In 1974 he married the cookbook author Carol Truax, who was also Executive Director of Fine Arts from Colorado College and later consultant in the field of Fine Arts at the State University of New York.
