Gustavsberg, Värmdö

Gustavsberg is a small town ( tätort ) in the Swedish Stockholm County and municipal seat of Värmdö. The place is about 22 km east of Stockholm center.

History

Gustavsberg was formerly Farsta, but the owner of the castle of Farsta, Gabriel Oxenstierna had to rename the place to honor his father, Gustav Oxenstierna. The decisive development thrust came when in 1825 a porcelain factory was opened. The rapidly growing trade settlement was dominated by factory managers who were considered to be progressive, and soon had a role model for similar sites.

One of these was the Conservative member of Parliament William Odelberg that was active from 1869 to the 1920s. He led Gustavsberg on patriarchal manner, reaching 1902, the administrative separation of the location of the community Värmdö. The conditions of the staff were so good that it lasted here until 1919, to a trade union organization was established. In the same year, the consumer cooperative Gustavsberg was founded. This gave the settlement a cooperative character and bought 1938 china factory. Nowhere in Sweden had cooperatives such a strong influence as in Gustavsberg. After that it took until 1974 to Gustavsberg again a part of the community Värmdö was.

Traffic

The place is connected by several bus lines with the station Slussen in central Stockholm. The trip takes 20 to 25 minutes.

Attractions

Apart from the china factory with an associated museum Gustavsberg is for his round house, which was built in the 1950s as a local government, is known. The appearance of the building in which a library is housed remembered today, removed a " lemon squeezer ". The Treudd Gustavsberg close to the harbor.
