Guy Erwin

R. Guy Erwin (* in Oklahoma) is an American university professor and a Protestant- Lutheran theologian and bishop.

Erwin studied at Harvard University and Yale University and earned a bachelor's degree and two master's degrees and a doctorate. From 1993 to 1999 he taught history and theology at Yale Divinity School. From 2000 he was a professor of Lutheran theology and church history at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks tätig.2008 he was appointed to the Commission on Faith and Order of the World Council. Although part-time role as parish associate since 1986 in a Lutheran congregation in New Haven (Connecticut) had worked, he was ordained in 2011.

In May 2013 Erwin by the Synod of Southwest California ( Southwest California Synod ) was elected for a six year term as bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Erwin is gay and lives in a same-sex relationship since 1994. Erwin is not only, as Osage, the first indigenous Americans, but also the first openly homosexual bishop of the ELCA.
