Guy of Ibelin (died 1304)

Guy of Ibelin (* 1250 or 1255; † February 14, 1304 ) was Titulargraf of Jaffa ( such as Guido of Jaffa ) in the Kingdom of Jerusalem.

He was a younger son of John of Ibelin, Count of Jaffa and his wife Maria of Armenia. When his father's death in 1266 his older brother Jacob had inherited his titles and estates.

When attacked in the spring of 1268 the Mamluk Sultan of Egypt, Baybars I, Jaffa, apparently Guido commanded the defense of the city fortress. Jaffa and the Templar Castle Pelerin were then the only remaining Crusader forts south of Acre. Guido's father had since 1256 held a non-aggression pact with the Mamluks, the latter had always respected. Jacob and Guido relied on that Baybars would hold even after John's death the peace. Therefore, Jaffa was the city, as the Mamluk army on March 7, appeared before her, only inadequately equipped for defense. After twelve hours' fighting, the city fell into the hands of the Sultan. Many of the inhabitants were massacred, only Guido and the crew, which was itself entrenched with him in the Citadel allowed to withdraw unmolested to Acre.

Later he went to relatives in Cyprus. After the childless death of his brother Jacob in 1276 he inherited his Titularansprüche.

1290 he married Mary of Ibelin - Ashkelon, only daughter of the constable Philip of Ibelin and Simone of Tiberias. The couple had five children:

  • Philip (* 1291, † 1316 ), 1304 Titulargraf of Jaffa
  • Johann († 1315/16 )
  • Marie of Ibelin (* 1294, † 1316/18 ), ∞ 1307/10 King Hugo IV of Cyprus ( † 1359 )
  • Hugo (* 1295, † by 1349 ), 1316 Titulargraf of Jaffa, ∞ Isabella of Ibelin († 1342 ), daughter of Philip of Ibelin († 1318 ), Seneschal of Cyprus
  • Balian (* 1302), ∞ I) 1322 Joan of Montfort († 1325 ), II ) ∞ 1325 Margarethe von Oven

Guido died in 1304 in Cyprus and was buried in the cemetery in Nicosia.
