Guzmania

Guzmania hybrids ' Rana ' Corn growers. Bak, Parents: G. wittmackii 'Red ' × G. cardinalis var lingulata Habit and inflorescence.

The plant genus Guzmania belongs to the family Bromeliaceae ( Bromeliaceae ), which includes the pineapple belongs. There are about 200 species of this genus. The genus was named in 1802 by its Erstbeschreibern, Hipólito Ruiz and José Antonio Pavón Lopez y Jiménez, after the Spanish chemist and plant collector Anastasio Guzman († 1807).

Origin

The range of the Guzmania species ranges from Florida over the Greater Antilles, Mexico and Central America to western Brazil. Most Guzmanien are located in northwestern South America in the tropical rain forest zone of the Andes from Colombia to Ecuador. A center of diversity is in Costa Rica and Panama. Some species and their varieties are ornamentals, they are well suited as houseplants.

Description

These herbaceous perennial plants are mostly epiphytes. All species are funnel bromeliads; their stem axis is compressed and the leaves are bunched together in rosettes. The leaves overlap in such a way that a funnel to collect water is produced. The parallel venation leaves are usually sword-shaped.

The often brightly colored inflorescences are long lasting and usually unbranched in many species. The hermaphrodite flowers are triple.

Are formed capsule fruits. The seeds have a " parachute " similar to the dandelion.

Propagation and maintenance as an ornamental plant

The Horticultural Propagation is usually by seed. Also meristem is used in some varieties for proliferation.

The flowering time can be long depending on the type about half a year, after which the mother plant dies gradually. When caring for the mother as an ornamental plant forms after flowering vegetative offshoot called Kindel. These should be kept to a minimum for some time connected to the mother plant. Young plants need a partially shady place, with high humidity. Full-grown plants that have already started to bloom, flourish wherever it is bright enough. Before flowering should always be sufficient water in the hopper.
